Gülsün Karamustafa receives highly endowed art prize

One of the highest endowed European art prizes this year goes to the Turkish artist Gülsün Karamustafa. She will receive 150,000 francs (around 138,000 euros), as the Board of Trustees of the Roswitha Haftmann Foundation announced on Wednesday in Zurich. “The artist, whose work includes various genres such as painting, installation, video and performance, is one of the most important artists in Turkey,” announced the foundation. “Her work is inspired by the aesthetics of Byzantine icons and reverse glass painting, but breaks with the traditions of canon art.” Karamustafa was born in Ankara in 1946. She lives and works in Istanbul. As early as the 1970s, she dealt with topics such as migration, feminism, gender and coming to terms with colonialism, as the foundation reports. Renowned institutions such as the “Tate Modern” in London, the “Guggenheim Museum” in New York or the “Museum Ludwig” in Cologne have acquired works from her.
