In Turkey, the largest dam on the Tigris, the Ilisu hydropower plant, has been inaugurated. The power plant is supposed to cover 4% of the total electricity demand in Turkey. Construction started in 2006. The dammed lake should extend over 135 kilometers, twice as long as Lake Constance. The Ilisu Dam is just a project that Turkey is planning. The Turkish government has built more than 850 dams since 2002, according to the newspaper Hürriyet. Thousands more are to be built on the Black Sea coast and in Anatolia.
