According to demographic data for 2020 published by the Turkish statistical office TÜIK, the population of the metropolis of Istanbul is declining. In 2020 it decreased by 56,815 year-on-year to 15,462,452. TÜIK emphasized that the population of Istanbul has been declining since 2001, that is for the first time in 20 years. This is very remarkable, because the total population of Turkey increased by 13.9 in 2019 and by 5.5 per mille in 2020. In its latest statistics, TÜIK has determined the number of 83,614,362 as the total number of inhabitants in Turkey for 2020. This has increased by 459,365 people or 5.5 per mille compared to the previous year.
