The new airport is currently named Istanbul New Airport and is intended to reduce the crowds at Atatürk International Airport, currently the main airport in Istanbul. Atatürk Airport, located on the European side of the metropolis on the Bosporus cannot cope anymore with the growing demand for air traffic. There are no possibilities for expansion: there are industrial areas to the north of Ataturk Airport, and residential areas to the east and west. Another problem is: due to the proximity of the city center traffic around the airport is stuck.
Meanwhile, the construction of Istanbul New Airport started on a former mining site 35 km from the city center on the Black Sea coast. There is enough room for the planned four construction phases.
