Türkiye wants to significantly increase natural gas storage capacity

Turkey wants to increase its natural gas storage capacity to 14.4 billion cubic meters (bcm) by 2028. To achieve this, the capacities of the natural gas storage facilities in Silivri and Tuz Gölü are to be expanded. This would mean that Turkey would have the third largest storage capacity in Europe after Germany (24 bcm) and Italy (16 bcm).Natural gas is used in Turkey to generate electricity and heat. A lot has been invested in natural gas infrastructure over the past 40 years. These include pipelines, LNG facilities and offshore fleets for gas and oil exploration. In Silivri the capacity is to be increased from 4.6 to 5.6 bcm, in Tuz Gölü from 5.8 to 14.4 bcm. The storage facilities are intended to ensure the country’s energy security. In addition, the dependence on natural gas imports should be reduced.Turkey aims to become an important energy hub in the region. Last year Ankara concluded natural gas export contracts with several European countries. These include the states bordering the Black Sea and the Danube countries Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Hungary.
